The monarchy form of government has thrived harmoniously in five countries of Southeast Asia, blending the traditions of kingship with modern constitutional rules. Thailand, Malaysia, and Cambodia have monarchs as titular heads of state whereas Brunei has an absolute rule; while Indonesia has uniquely retained monarchy that thrives in a national republican context.
The two monarchical traditions, namely traditional and modern, exist cohesively with other modern forms of government even during stressful alterations of government such as succession or governmental change.
Therefore, the dynamics of political stability, sustainability and development in the majority of ASEAN countries such as Thailand, Kampuchea, Brunei and Malaysia must be fully understood in relation with the functions of a monarchical framework. Experiences in other monarchical governance such as in Australia seem to provide an insight into the multiple dimensions of the resilience of the monarchies.
To gather and disseminate information to the public on the role and function of the monarchy in ASEAN countries;
To share experiences and knowledge on the monarchical socio-political in ASEAN countries;
To increase awareness among the younger generation on the importance of the monarchy system as a foundation for stability and development in a country;
To establish a regional network of monarchical systems research and information exchange.
